There are different varieties of foods in Nigeria due to the diversity of the ethnic groups we have. The foods are prepared using spices and herbs that make each food different and unique at the same time.
There are certain ingredients that are synonymous to certain foods as they would make them come out greatly. Most of the foods indigenous to Nigeria require either palm oil or groundnut oil. These foods have high nutritional value and look great when they are set.
It would be unfair to go on talking about the taste of these foods when you are yet to see them yourself. If you are a Nigerian who resides in your home country, you might have eaten some of these foods before. But if you have not, then we implore you to try eating some of these foods for a change.
They are foods you definitely have to try when next you are in Nigeria. These foods cut across the major tribes we have in Nigeria and it would be sensational to try them. Below are some of the Nigerian foods you should try:
1. Pap and Akara
You would love to try this Nigerian food when the bean cake Akara is well made. Some people even enjoy taking their pap with Moinmoin which is bean pudding. This Nigerian food is very light and it is known to help many relax. It is also taken to nurture sick people back to life as it suits many people’s systems.
2. Amala and Ewedu
This Nigerian food is indigenous to the Yoruba people in Nigeria. The amala is made from yam flour most times and is eaten using ewedu soup or any other soup of interest.
3. Tuwo Shinkafa
This is made from rice. This Nigerian food is indigenous to the northern part of Nigeria and could be eaten with northern soups or soups made from every other part of Nigeria. 4. Nkwobi
This is served in many bars and restaurants across the country. Meat which is well seasoned and spiced with herbs are piled in a small mortar-like plate. It could be eaten in between meals and with drinks.
5. Boli
This is basically roasted plantain. To many Nigerians, it is considered a snack as many people eat it while they are moving from one place to the other. This delicacy is filling and of high nutritional value. When it is unripe, it contains lots of iron which helps to prevent goitre and when it is ripe, it contains glucose. It is mostly eaten with groundnuts.
6. Plantain porridge
This Nigerian food is different from every other porridge you may know. It is made from plantain and depending on how creative the cook is, it could be stocked with fish, vegetables and different spices in it. The plantain used here is usually unripe plantain which is high in iron.
7. Abacha
This food is indigenous to the Igbo people. Abacha is made from cassava and is enjoyed by people from other tribes too. Many people refer to it as African salad.
8. Groundnut soup
This soup can be eaten with Eba or any other Nigerian food of choice. Sometimes, the groundnut soup is made adding vegetables to improve its nutritional value. Most times, people sprinkle Ugwu leaves on the groundnut soup.
